Notes
This rise toward to the church, a work from his beginnings, is the only completed view known to us of Auvers-sur-Oise. Philippe Smit returns there regularly from 1911 up until the Great War. In his letters and cards, he speaks of work projects of which we have received some sketches: a coloured study of the same view (fig. 1), which should be dated around this period, and three other sketches of a street in Auvers, one appearing in a letter, another larger one (fig. 2) in one of his drawing folders and a third one, a fragment of a letter, known from a copy.
